Former Dropbox CTO Quentin Clark Joins General Catalyst as Managing Director

Quentin Clark, the former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Dropbox, has joined the venture capital firm General Catalyst as a managing director.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Quentin Clark resigned from his position as CTO at Dropbox, while the company also announced that two other executives, Bharat Mediratta and Tim Young, would be joining its leadership team in Clark’s place. Now, it has been revealed that Clark is taking on a new role as a managing director with General Catalyst.

A Team of Experienced Investors

Clark joins an impressive team of enterprise investors at General Catalyst, including Steve Herrod, the former CTO of VMware; Paul Sagan, the former CEO of Akamai; and Holly Maloney, who joined GC as its first female managing director roughly two years ago after spending seven years with North Bridge Venture Partners in Boston. Clark will be based in the Bay Area, where he will focus on earlier-stage opportunities alongside Herrod.

A Conversation with Quentin Clark

We had the opportunity to speak with Clark recently and learn more about his decision to join General Catalyst as a managing director. When asked if he had been working informally with GC for a number of years, Clark replied:

"Yes, I was in Seattle for a long time. I moved down here five years ago and was introduced to a bunch of great folks in the venture community, including Hemant Taneja [of GC] and Reid Hoffman and I spent time with different investments in their portfolios, helping to advise them and investing and that kind of stuff."

A Career Spanning Two Decades

Clark’s career spans over 20 years, with two years as a C-suite executive at SAP and the remainder of his tenure spent with Microsoft. He shared:

"It isn’t often you get to help pivot something as impactful as what’s happening at Dropbox. We did [Dropbox’s] User Conference event in late September, and we launched Dropbox Spaces, which is a fundamental pivot based on a point of view about what the workplace is like and where the pain points are."
